To determine the proper size doghouse needed for your pup, here are a few guidelines: • The standard school of thought recommended by the Humane Society of the United States, various veterinarians, and dog trainers state that there should be enough room in a doghouse for your dog to stand, turn fully in a circle, and lie down in a variety of comfortable positions. • A secondary school of thought provides a more easily comprehended approximation system that allows you to build your doghouse to your dog’s specific measurements. This theory states that the door height should be slightly less than your dog’s shoulder height, the length and width should be one to one and a half your dog’s length if measuring from tip of nose to base of tail, and the height of your house should be at least the height of your standing dog. • Since dogs have evolved from cave to kennels and doghouses, it’s important that the size provides a sense of security and is enough room to be comfortable. If either too small or too large, your pup may not use the dwelling. Also in terms of weather considerations, an appropriately sized house can help retain body heat during colder months and allow for ventilation in warmer seasons. • If you own multiple pooches, each dog should have their own individual area and should not share a doghouse. This can be resolved by either one structure with two distinct areas to accommodate your pups or by having entirely separate houses. • Other factors that make up the proper doghouse environment are a roof designed to withstand elements and prevent rain and snow from reaching inside the house, bedding material such as hay or cedar shavings that are changed frequently to sustain sanitary conditions, and a door if in extreme weather conditions to provide warmth and protection. If geographically located in warmer climates, make sure that your dog’s house isn’t in direct sunlight to avoid overheating.
