Is Kraktom An Opioid?

In the United States, the Drug Enforcement Agency considers kratom to be an opioid. It says that its computer model confirms that several of the plant's active ingredients, called alkaloids, would bind with opioid receptors located in the human brain. These are the same receptors targeted by such opioids as oxycodone and hydrocodone. However, a computer model isn't proof that kratom behaves like those drugs in the body. Just because a substance can bind to a brain receptor doesn't mean that it can activate it. In fact, that's how opioid antidotes like Narcan work. They bind to brain opioid receptors, but they cannot activate them. On the other hand, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence that kratom does relieve pain and ease opioid withdrawal symptoms. Some people also report mild euphoria, but nothing close to that produced by standard pharmaceutical opioids. The effects of kratom are dose-related. The tree is in the coffee family, but its leaves contain no caffeine. When taken in lower doses of less than five grams, it acts as a mild stimulant. In higher doses of five to 15 grams, it has a sedative effect. These higher doses relieve pain and induce limited euphoria in some individuals. Kratom may be somewhat addictive if taken regularly, but many former opioid users say that the plant helped them stop using their drug of choice. Some continue the kratom in low doses. They consider it to be better and safer than the opioids they took before. It's not expensive. It's not illegal in most states. It's easy to get in states that allow it. Kratom is certainly preferable to injecting heroin or buying prescription opioids on the black market. Could kratom be the next generation treatment for opioid addiction? What do you think?
