 A Legal Secretary Is a Paralegal by Pure DefinitionThe Greek prefix "para" means next to or along side. Hence we get the relatively new word "paralegal." Doesn't a legal secretary also work right next to or along side lawyers? Yes they do which means that litigation secretaries are the original legal assistants who existed long before the word paralegal was invented by civil rights attorneys in the 1960's. I began my litigation support career thirty years ago with insurance company in-house law firms as a litigation secretary. Many other legal secretaries work in corporate, real estate and contract law. I always stand up for legal secretaries not just because I started out as one. In many instances legal secretary is a higher paid and more valued and respected position on the law firm hierarchy.Legal Secretary Debate: Word vs. Word Perfect?When choosing software, always go with the big numbers. Always choose any product based upon the sheer amount of users involved with that product. In law firms that means running Microsoft Word on a Windows laptop. Having your legal secretary or paralegal run your law firm on a Macintosh machine using WordPerfect limits the available pool of users and machines that you can contract or work with. More contract paralegals have windows laptops that Macintosh machines and more legal secretaries are experts with Word than WordPerfect. In the Word vs. Wordperfect debate I say whatever keeps the legal secretary happy, that is my law firm motto. A Good Paralegal Never Says: I Don't Do Legal SecretaryA great paralegal is a team player who would never have an issue with performing so-called legal secretary work.
