So, how does countertop edging affect the cabinets below? Any water or liquid splashed or spilled on a countertop is eventually going to run over the front edge. Double bullnose edging is the worst edge style for countertops. The liquids roll over the edging and drip down onto the cabinets and cabinet doors below. Eventually you will notice the finish on the cabinets and doors start to peel and flake off. This is caused by the moisture in the liquid absorbing into the wood and expanding the wood structure. The coating on top of the wood cannot expand and contract as the wood does when it absorbs the moisture. Whether the coating is a paint finish or a stain and clear protective coat finish, the results are the same. The finish on top of the wood begins to crack and eventually will pop or fall off of the wood below as coatings are not flexible like wood is. The best countertop edging or nosing is one that hangs past the front edge of the cabinet doors and has a square bottom edge. The square bottom edge helps prevent the spill or moisture from rolling underneath the countertop nosing and dripping onto the cabinets below. Most of the moisture will fall off the square bottom edge and fall to the floor in front of the cabinet doors, thereby leaving the cabinets dry and not subject to expansion from moisture.
