The Pearl House

Best chow fun & other noodle dishes in the neighborhood & beyond. Always greeted warmly with a smile & prompt, efficient service provided. That goes for times when I have the food delivered. While the restaurant itself is simple & looks more like an old-fashioned coffee shop, the high quality food & service more than make up the lack of "atmosphere". ...read more

China Village Restaurant

1.0

By Mark W

This restaurant has old menus posted outside the entrance and a stack of carry-out menus on the cashier's counter. They have never been updated to show the restaurant's now much-higher prices (at least $1 or $2 more for each dish). I complained to the cashier about this several months ago yet the restaurant has done nothing to correct what amounts to their false advertising. Besides this, I have repeatedly found the food and service to be mediocre at best. The staff is rude and obnoxious. There are several much better Chinese restaurants nearby further up Solano Avenue & on San Pablo Ave. ...read more

China Village Restaurant

1.0

By Mark Wo at Citysearch

First of all, I had consistently found the food and service at China Village to be mediocre at best. The only reason I ever returned at all is that it is within easy walking distance of where I live in Albany or I had to be out doing errrands nearby & needed to eat right away. I will no longer purchase any food from this place for the mediocrity and, more important, becuase of the following:\t\n\t\nMy biggest complaint about China Village is the dishonest way in which they advertise their prices - they are literally running a scam operation. I realized this a few months ago when I looked at one of the their carry-out menus stacked on the cashier's counter at the restaurant entrance. I placed an order (3 items) and was startled when the middle-aged Asian woman acting as cashier gave me a total price way more than I had mentally calculated. I showed her the carry-out menu & asked why the amount she just told me was so much higher. Whereas I had heard her speak in perfectly fluent English a moment before, she now started to speak in "broken English" and seemed annoyed at my questioning her. She shoved the restaurant menu (the one given to diners already at tables) at me and stated that "prices go up - here, see for yourself". I pointed out to her that all of the carry-out menus, as well as the ones posted behind a glass window outside the restaurant entrance) showed lower prices (most dishes were at least one or two dollars less on those menus). The cashier then made a perfunctory show of taking the carry-out menus off of the counter and, putting them slightly aside & saying "we fix". I noticed that she did NOT toss them in the trash can that was right next to her.\t\n\t\nThe next time I went past China Village I noticed that the same carry-out menus with the phony lower prices were back on the cashier's counter & the same exact menues were still posted behind glass outside the restaurant entrance. And this has been the case every time I have passed the restaurant for the past several months, including today.\t\n\t\nI guess the China Village management thinks that people won't notice that they are being charged more than the lower prices advertised and/or, if they do, they'll be too embarassed or lazy to question the actual higher prices charged or walk out.\t\n\t\nI am spreading the word about China Village as I believe they are being dishonest and probably breaking a 'truth-in-advertising" law or regulation.\t\n\t\nThere are a few other Chinese Restaurants on Solano Avenue that offer much better food and service, and are honest about their prices. I highly recommend them over China Village. ...read more

Sugata Japanese Restaurant

I have bleeding eczema sores all over my hands, which I used to examine a plate of old fish served to me at Sugata. The supposedly fresh fish had the texture OLD ceviche, and a strong odor of Vinegar. When I returned the plate, the Chef loudly berated me while eating the plate of returned fish, he then served the rest of the plate to other patrons in the restaurant. I sure hope I do not have any diseases. ...read more

Shik DO Rack

My wife and I love Shik Do Rock (which translates as Epicurean), and go there at least once a month, if not more. Contrary to the crazy (!!) reviews I've been reading, the staff is very friendly and sweet, and they remembered our orders by heart, even after just the first two visits. We're both vegetarian, so Korean food in general can be a little intimidating. But the vegetarian dolsot bibimbap (hot stone pot with sizzing rice, tofu, veggies, and mushrooms) is so delicious, healthy, and satisfying that we keep going back for more. It comes with or without egg, so it's easy to order a completely vegan meal. Also they bring about 6 or 7 small side dishes to eat while you wait. I love the sprouts, and especially the yam noodles. I also love the tea they serve. ...read more

very slow service, dried out fish and lamb chops (which was a special for the evening at $32), tasteless pasta - this was on Sunday night with restaurant about 50% filled. I would not recommend this restaurant. When we came, they did not have menues for us and we had to wait until another table had finished using their copies. This set the tone for the rest of our meal. Eveyone was very disappointed with the meal. ...read more

it's nice to have an upscale offering in the neighborhood... BUT they need to hire experienced wait-persons, who not only know the food and service, but who also are at ease. I was uncomfortable waiting for him to open and serve the wine and watching him fumble. Watch your credit card, too. They added an amount for tip after we both signed and left (we had split the $400 tab for a party of 6). Turns out the tab had ""tip included"", but they didn't put that amount on the ticket!! ...read more

We've eaten there twice and both times we were very impressed with the food. Our steak and chicken were perfectly done and the artichoke and beet salads were stand outs, as well. To top it off, the atmosphere was charming and the service, gracious. You can tell the owner has put her heart and soul into the ""new"" Post Meridian. How Do Restaurants Make Enchiladas?

Many people think that an enchilada in a restaurant is much better than anything they can ever find at home, unless they know a lot of Hispanic people.
