AWFUL - avoid at all costs

Oh, wow. Now that I've read the reviews on Yelp, it all makes sense. And I haven't even rented from them.\t\n\t\nI saw an ad on Craigslist for an apartment on Armitage and Sheffield. Large studio, decent price, a short walk to DePaul... sounds good. I called and left Matt Yellin a message and he got back to me after the weekend. He set up a showing for 1 o'clock that day. While I'm getting ready to head over there, he calls and says that we need to reschedule because that was an inconvenient day for the tenant. He said that he wouldn't show anyone else the apartment before I get a chance to look at it. Okay, whatever, we decide to meet the next day at noon. Thirty minutes before we're supposed to meet, he sends me a text:\t\n\t\n"Hello this is Matt Yellin. We have an appointment today at 12. Sorry for the short notice, but I have to cancel. I will call you about rescheduling. Thanks"\t\n\t\nI replied:\t\n\t\n"Why? I'm very interested in this apartment and I made time in my schedule to see it (twice) so is there any way I can go see it myself?"\t\n\t\nYeah, I was desperate. I really wanted to live next door to Chicago Bagel Authority, okay? I waited awhile, and Matt never got back to me. He canceled on me twice, and I was irked that this time he had done so via text. So not classy. He's supposed to be a real estate agent, not a flake, though I am finding out that those terms are often synonymous. I ended up calling Jab Realty. I ended up calling Paul, one of the listed contacts at Jab Realty's website. I said that I was very interested in this apartment and I had been blown off twice by one of their people and I wanted someone else to show me the apartment. Paul was not apologetic, but he said that they would find out what was going on and that he would get back to me.\t\n\t\nOf course, he didn't. Instead, I got a text from Matt that said "The place is rented." I didn't know if this was a lie because he didn't want to deal with me anymore, or if he had shown the apartment to someone else. So I made my boyfriend call him a few hours later and pose as another interested renter and ask to see the apartment. It's not psycho, it's resourceful. Matt clarified that he was in the process of signing someone else to the lease. That's cool, because yesterday when you called to reschedule me for today when you also canceled on me, you said that I was the first person you had talked to about this apartment and that you wouldn't show it to anyone else. I don't know why he blew me off like this, because the $900 that I would have paid is the same as someone else's. He should have kept his professional word to me because I was the first person to contact him. It's like being a waiter in a restaurant-- if a party comes in 10 minutes after the first one, you don't take their order first.\t\n\t\nI know it's hard to find a good agency to rent from in Chicago, but just AVOID this one and particularly MATT YELLIN-- you WILL get screwed over.

Crooks! Don't rent from no matter what!

Irresponsible, unaccountable management. Avoids tenants complaints and does not resolve problems. They've been ripping people off for 25 years apparently. Dont' sucked in by the no security deposit, it's not worth the poor standards of living. The neighborhood is great and yeah, there's a new, nice kitchen but if you can't live there, what's the point?
