When you wake up on a wintry morning and turn on the faucet and no water comes out, it's not a good way to start the day. The sad fact is your pipes have probably succumbed to frigid air and frozen the water inside them. We've faced this situation a few times but have been fortunate to unfreeze the pipes before they burst, which is a massive problem that only a plumber can remedy. If there's a trickle of water, keep it running so the water moves and can't freeze. Open the cabinet concealing the pipe leading to the faucet, and remove everything inside, so warm air can circulate around the pipe. If your have copper or plastic pipes, use a hair dryer or heat gun to warm the pipe and melt the water. Direct the heat to the pipe and away from anything that might burn from the heating appliance. Use a small space heater to help. A plumber will charge $135 to unfreeze a pipe and repair a leak if the pipe burst from freezing. But this is a dicey job, and it's often not just one pipe that's frozen or easy to reach. A handy homeowner with plumbing tools and experience can repair a small burst pipe for $35, the cost of the pipe and fittings. You need a hacksaw or tubing cutter and an assortment of slip-joint pliers and pipe wrenches to cut and remove the bad section of pipe and splice in a short section of new pipe. You may get lucky and be able to fix it yourself, but it's been our experience that hiring a plumber is the way to go with frozen pipes. Definitely call a pro to fix a galvanized steel pipe. To avoid frozen pipes in the future, insulate all the pipes - especially those on north-facing exterior walls. Cover them with a foam sleeve or wrap fiberglass strips around them. And pay attention to weather predictions. For laminate and melamine finishes, be sure to rough up the surface with 150-grit sandpaper, and apply a good bonding primer before topping it off with the color of your choice. If you’re going to dive into this DIY project, keep these tips in mind: Lighter-colored paints will make your kitchen seem bigger. Don’t skip on prep. Thoroughly clean cabinet doors and boxes to remove grease and dried-on gunk; fill holes or nicks with wood putty, then sand. Sand each coat of paint so your final coat will look perfect. Lay doors flat to paint, and wait until each side is completely dry before painting the other side. It will take more time, but you’ll avoid ugly drip marks. 3. Molding Miracles Crown molding adds a touch of class to the tops of tired cabinets for less than you’d expect. Asphalt shingles

Asphalt shingles are currently the most popular type of residential roof material for a variety of reasons. They are relatively inexpensive, starting at around $0.80 per square foot installed and go up from there. Things that determine cost are geographical location, slope of the roof, height of the building, ease of access to the premises, complexity of the project, the particular type of shingle and numerous other factors. Asphalt shingles are very simple to install enabling many homeowners to do the work themselves. They come in a variety of colors and styles, are fairly durable (some have been tested and have achieved a class IV hail rating - the highest available!), and can be easily repaired and maintained.The lifespan of asphalt shingles depends highly upon the environment. Shingles in cooler climates such as the northern United States seem to last longer than those installed in the warmer climates. Studies have shown that the average lifespan for a 20 year shingle in Phoenix, Arizona is around 14 years. In Minneapolis, Minnesota the lifespan was 19.5 years. And in Reading, Pennsylvania, the lifespan was 20.8 years. From this data it seems obvious that the hotter the environment is, the shorter the service life of the shingles. One thing that's very damaging to shingles is Thermal Shock. Thermal Shock is what roofing materials experience when the ambient temperature changes dramatically within a very short period of time - usually 24 hours. For example, in Yreka, California, the temperatures during a summer day can often reach 100 degrees and at night, they'll often drop below 50, sometimes as low as 40. Roofing materials are unable to expand and contract to accommodate such a dramatic temperature change in such a short period of time so cracks and splits in the materials start occurring. Water can then enter the materials and damage them further in two ways. One is the damage water does to asphalt materials in general. It's not that water hurts asphalt, but algae and fungus do and the continuous presence of water will permit algae and fungus to grow on asphalt materials. Another way water damages is the freeze-thaw cycle. In the cold months, water will get into the cracks and then freeze at night. Water expands as it freezes so the more this occurs, the bigger the cracks or splits become. This is why most roofing contractors and consultants are such big advocates of sloped roofs. The better the roof sheds water, the less problems it will usually experience. Still another factor affecting asphalt shingle roofs is attic ventilation. Proper roof ventilation has been known to extend the service life of a roof. Concrete is an excellent construction material for many applications. The expected use of the concrete will help determine the required thickness and any special properties. The load carrying capacity of a slab is primarily dependent on thickness. A four-inch-thick slab will handle common weight loads such as foot traffic, light storage, cars, pickups, light tractors and animals. Whereas a six-inch-think slab will handle most medium-duty weight loads, such as motor homes, straight trucks and larger equipment. Reinforcement materials such as wire mesh, fibers or rebar add strength and durability to the slab and reduce cracking and shifting. Unusually heavy vehicles or high-traffic projects may require special design consideration. Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard. It is calculated by multiplying the surface area by the thickness in feet to determine the total volume in cubic feet. Divide this value by 27 to obtain the volume in cubic yards. It is often wise to increase the calculated volume by five or ten percent to help account for slight deviations in slab thickness, spillage, etc. Uniformity, in both soil composition and compaction, is the key to a good subgrade—one that will provide adequate support, ensure an even slab thickness, and prevent slab settlement and structural cracking. All outdoor slabs subject to weather conditions should be broomed. Brooming the surface after floating or troweling is the last step in finishing that produces an abrasive, slip-resistant surface.  Careful consideration should be given allowing it to “cure.” Fresh concrete should not be subjected to temperatures below 40°F for at least a week. When pouring concrete in cold weather, some type of insulation should be used to keep the concrete surface from freezing (e.g., insulation blankets or straw). Inversely, concrete should not be allowed to dry too quickly in very warm weather. When pouring concrete that is in direct sunlight with temperatures in excess of 90°F, it is recommended to keep the surface damp with a light water mist, dampened straw or flooding to enhance curing by supplying additional water. ...read more

Removed water damaged floors from four rooms of my double wide home. Then advised how they thought best the repairs would be made. After the insurance inspection, helped in obtaining all the needed materials at our local home improvement store then installed the materials. The water damage was not from frozen plumbing but rather a failure of the existing plumbing. The master bathroom, master bedroom, hallway, and laundry room were restored. It was a truly beautiful restoration from that water damage. Initially finding the water leak source required cutting drywall, removing damaged carpet and flooring. The leak was located under the master bath garden tub. The lead was not big enough to hear and the hunt for it was difficult. Repairing, flooring from under that garden tub, then the master bath, the hallway and laundry room. The flooring in the bath was fixed with vinyl flooring, carpeting in the bedroom, hall and laundry room. The bath was also repaired from water damage. Once the new sub-flooring was set, new carpet pads and carpet were installed. In the bedroom, wainscoting was repaired with new wainscoting, chair rail, and baseboard. After the painting of those materials with new double doors the master bedroom looks better than when new 20 years ago.
