What is a Boil Water Advisory?  You may have seen a notice like this one recently posted in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania in your area and wondered what it's about. "SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Pa. --The people of South Whitehall Township in Lehigh County remain under a boil water advisory .  The South Whitehall Township Authority Main Water System says it issued the advisory Friday after a positive test for E. coli.  On Sunday, the first round of tests on the water came back negative for E. coli. The water must come back clean on two consecutive tests before the advisory can be lifted. Officials say they hope the second round of tests will come back Monday afternoon." These Boil Water Advisories are actually quite frequent. In fact, if you set up a Google alert on the topic, you will not-so-pleasantly surprised at how frequent they occur. So what do they mean? Basically, it means that there has been a breakdown somewhere in the water treatment or delivery process that has caused a harmful bacteria to enter the water supply.  What does it mean for you? It means you MUST boil prior to drinking it or even cooking with it. Also be extra cautious with small children who drink their bathwater or drink directly from the tap (like when brushing their teeth). Small children are especially susceptible to the E coli because of their immature immune systems. Protecting them from these outbreaks should be a top priority. How can you eliminate the worry of an E Coli outbreak in your area? I'm in the Sustainable Business Network Of Philadelphia and Chef's Collaborative.  My footpint's small: carbon (yes, very sustainable), market impact (unfortunately yes). Yet everyone (media, advertising, health professionals) tell us to reduce fats (and consume better ones) and sugar (& use better). To tailor our diets to higher quality, more nutritious foods. My products are ALL THAT. 1/2 the fat&sugar of traditional ice cream and All Natural. Nutrition in goat milk is more available to the body because the molecules are smaller and more digestible. This same reason means the Lactose Intolerant can enjoy real ice cream (even though it's reduced fat) again. Other health benefits: fats in goat milk are high medium chain triglycerides (my cardialogist says GREAT) and so Heart Healthy.
