When clients ask me how to make sure their digital photos are good for print work, web, and email, I give them the following advice:
  1. When using a digital camera for the 1st time, read the manual and learn what each resolution (or size of pictures) setting means.
  2. To make sure your photos will be print quality, I do not recommend using the camera's default setting.  Most default settings are at a lower pixel resolution which means they will be good for web sites and emailing, but horrible for printing.
  3. Set your camera's photo size/pixel setting to the largest possible.  Large photos can be resized and made smaller for web sites and emailing, but small photos can not be enlarged/made bigger without losing quality and making photos blurry or pixelated (the small squares you can see in photos that make it look distorted or jagged.)
  4. When you have the proper size settings complete, it's time to take your photos.
  5. One tip; make sure you have proper lighting and the camera's lighting settings match your environment (outdoor, fluorescent lighting, night time, etc.  Any light source (including the sun) should be behind you or your shoulders.
We hope this has been of some help to you.
