Today in part II of Staring A Baby Nursery I'd like to cover buying your furniture, accessories and ways to cut your budget. This is when things get really fun and exciting but if not careful can do a wee bit of damage to your pocketbook. If you have free reign with no budget restrictions fantastic! NURSERY MUST HAVES Depending on your nursery and window capacity should you have a lot of windows or large windows you may want to consider blackout drapes for the room. Reason being should you have a summer baby the darkness will buy you an extra hour or so in much needed sleep in the mornings when the summer sun starts to rise much earlier. Not sure about you, but I know I needed that little extra help with sleep. The answer to keeping the nursery windows light and airy while having the option to darken the room when necessary would be the layering of various types of window treatments. Lined curtain panels alone will block the direct sunlight but the room will still be bright and the results will be less than optimal for getting baby to sleep. Unless the colors of the drapes and the lining are very dark, you will need to add some room darkening shades or blackout blinds to the arrangement. You can decorate your baby's nursery windows is with a blackout blind mounted inside the frame and a valance with my room darkening curtains. Use tie backs to hold the panels to the sides of the windows and raise and lower the shade according to how much sunlight you want to come into the bedroom at any given time. Install yourself a dimmer switch in the nursery. When going into babies room in the middle of the night it is less of a shock when the light goes on and you can control the brightness or lack of. TIME TO GO FURNITURE SHOPPING Ok here is the FUN part. First off find a good supplier. this makes things so much easier. Whether it's Wal-Mart, a high end baby store, Babies "R" Us, online or wherever, if you can get most of your nursery needs in one place, maybe two you are better off. Remember, simplify, make your life easier. Buying Online. Online suppliers more often have a much larger selection of products at lower prices than your average outlet stores. Do a google search and shop around to find your favorite online store that has what you like and fits your budget. Oh, and don't forget to sign up for their newsletter from your fav baby store so you know when the next sale is. Check the specials and outlet sections of the online store. Some offer a large range of closeout items up to 80% off! Check your local thrift stores, antique stores, yard sales. You will be very surprised at the great bargains and excellent nursery items you will find. Buy the focal point of your nursery design first. This is generally the crib. Please keep in mind if you are purchasing a convertible crib, buy the conversion kit at the same time. this will save you from having to run around all of creation in two years looking for the right one. Should your crib be discontinued by the time baby is ready for his/her toddler bed you might run into issues getting the right conversion kit for you babies bed. If you are gearing your nursery to convert to toddler in a couple of years you may want to consider choosing a theme and color scheme that will last (so you don't have to re-do the nursery in two years). With a few minor touches here and there some themes can last clear up to pre-teen years. Food for thought. Planning on another baby down the road for this nursery? Consider using neutral colors. Add brightly colored or themed accent items. This way if your first is a boy and next a girl you don't have to worry about color issues for gender. Enjoy and most of all have FUN!
