Top Ten Kitchen Design Trends: 2013 Most agree, the kitchen is the heart of any home. It is a place where families gather and daily living happens. According to a study by the research council of the Continental Automated Building Association, up to 65% of homeowners entertain in their kitchens and 15 of 21 weekly meals are made at home. Although trends come and go, the principals of functionality and space should always be at the heart of any kitchen design andkitchen remodelingproject. 1. Modern Style If we could use one word to sum up the design trends of 2013, it would be modern. From sleek architectural lines to LED lighting, these designs call out to our inner George and Jane Jetson. The NKBA reports that "transitional" kitchens have surpassed traditional kitchens for the first time in the association's history. As the hub of the home, the kitchen is still the best place to leave messages and control the home. This notion has been modernized with the addition of digital home security stations that control everything from the HVAC to exterior security cameras. 2. Hidden Appliances An increasing number of kitchen designs have incorporated matching cabinetry and appliance doors to hide the appliances within the space. This visual design element can be used to create an illusion of space, tricking the eye to believe the room is larger than it actually is. This is a great tool for homeowners struggling withsmall kitchen remodels. 3. Neutral Colors This year's color trend features neutral colors, specifically wood tones, greys and greens. We like this trend for its versatility. Neutrality creates a flexible color palette, allowing homeowners to express their personal style in the room's accents. Metal trim, LED lighting, banding and rivets and tapered waterfall shapes are among the latest trends. 5. Minimalist Design In 2013, we have seen a resurgence of minimalistic design. Some say a nod to the countries' economic forecast, while others believe that simple living is a necessary component to happiness. Regardless of the reasoning, we believe that this trend encompasses the basic principal of functionality in design. 6. Abundant Lighting LED lighting has taken over the kitchen in 2013. You will find it under cabinets, and along range hoods, creating a soft and ambient glow to the space. Recessed and track lighting continue to provide the best options for overhead task lighting, and bold pendant lights add a touch of artful design to the minimalist modern kitchens of 2013. 7. Hardwood Flooring In 2013, kitchen flooring is still dominated by the hard woods. However, we are beginning to see more light floors in ash, birch, maple, pine and white oak. These flooring options work best when combined with other recent trends such as modern design and neutral colors. 8. Large Kitchen Islands This year, we will see the kitchen island get a huge upgrade. As the task manager for any well run kitchen we know that size matters. These new kitchen islands take the place of traditional dining rooms, using bar stools to create a functional space between the kitchen and living areas. 9. Architectural Lines Using modern architectural lines in the sinks, cabinet pulls and accessories is a great way to take advantage of the modern and minimalistic design trends of 2013 without undertaking a major kitchen renovation. This year, we will find modern architectural lines in everything from range hoods to cabinetry. 10. Glass Backsplashes Glass is everywhere in the kitchen in 2013. From glass covered walls, to kitchen backsplashes. This trend is effective for ease of use and fits perfectly within the minimalistic and modern "transitional" designs.
