Canvas Print Quality 101, Part 1: “OBA-free and proud of it!”

Why can you get some 16×20” prints for $35 on some deal sites, and why do some cost much more? Reason would tell you there has to be a difference, right? Which should you choose? Is the more expensive print better quality? Or is cheaper just as good? We say nay and here is why . . . . Canvas comes in a variety of materials – typically cotton, linen, polyester or a blend of two of these three. Many companies use canvas treated with Optical Brightening Agents (OBA’s). OBA’s are dyes commonly used in laundry detergents, cosmetics and paper that reflect certain portions of the color spectrum so that the OBA-treated surface appears whiter & brighter. Sounds great, right? WRONG! OBA’s break down over time, which can cause irregular yellowing and premature deterioration of your canvas print. Put in plain terms, OBA’s make a substandard print appear at first to be higher quality than it really is . . . . In time, the inferiority of an OBA-treated canvas will literally show through. Only OBA-free canvas meets the Library of Congress’s definition of “Archival Quality.” Why are we telling you this? Because Reeltime Productions & Glimpse Photographic Gifts use only OBA-free, archival quality canvas. Our canvas meets the archival standards set forth by Fine Art Trade Guild for pH and lightfastness and has a display life of 100+ years. QUICK TIP – Want to find out if your precious memories have been printed on OBA-treated canvas? Get a black light and shine it on your canvas. If it lights up like Times Square on New Year’s Eve, that’s a print with OBA’s. If you want to ensure it lasts for generations, bring the picture in to us at Reeltime Productions. Next week, we talk canvas weight. ...read more
