What is Botox?

If you’re looking for a dramatic change to the overall look of your face, Botox should be an option on your list. Botox is an alternative to surgical procedures such as facelifts or other contouring methods. This process offers patients a shorter recovery period, is less expensive and is less invasive.

What is Botox

Botox derives from clostridium botulinum, a bacterium, and is classified as a toxin. This particular bacterium is the same substance that causes botulism in food. In order to be safely injected into the body the toxin is first purified and only used in small amounts.

What it does

The muscles underneath the skin work together in order to control your facial movements. As the muscles begin to tighten under the skin's surface, wrinkles are then formed. Receiving an injection of Botox causes those muscles to freeze, preventing wrinkles from forming.

Where it can be used

Botox is used to eliminate forehead lines, crow’s feet and most commonly for the removal of fine lines around the eyes. In rare instances it can be used around the mouth and in the neck.

Risks and side effects

Bruising is the most common side effect associated with the procedure, but is rarely experienced. If too much Botox is injected, your muscles may not work properly.
