Types of Unusual Korean Dishes

Korean cuisine is very different to many foreigners. Much of food is excellent and appetizing. There are rather unusual types of Korean dishes that have become known to outsiders. Take a person with you who knows what the local dishes are if you are one who does not like to try new dishes. Korean cooking can be an acquired taste with some specialties. With an adventuresome spirit you may find foods you enjoy.


  1. Go to a Korean restaurant and ask for Kaygogi. This is a type of dog soup, and yes they do make it out of dogs.

  2. Try an unusual spelled dish called Jjajajangmyun. It would be even more difficult to pronounce. The general agreement is that the dish is very good. It is a black bean noodle type of dish.

  3. Try some Kimchi as this is a very popular dish in Korea. It tastes unusual to foreigners because of the strong smell and spice. The dish is generally made from aged cabbage and sauerkraut soaked in a very spicy mix of pepper sauce.

  4. Roast some silkworms for a weird tasty treat. Vendors sell these on the streets of Korea.

  5. Wish for luck and eat a blowfish. The Koreans have figured out a way to make this dish without poisoning anyone.

  6. Have a little fun asking for ddukbokki, which is a very good hot spicy rice cake. These are served as snacks and are popular with many people.

  7. Carefully try some hoe. This is really raw fish. The Koreans eat a lot of seafood and have many dishes that are raw. Small squids, oysters and many other shellfish are often served as is.

  8. Arrange to try a form of porridge called juk. This can be made from a variety of ingredients including nuts, ginger and chicken.

  9. Be warned that soodae is blood sausages made out of real animals blood with noodles.

  10. Get a taste of the sea with seaweed soup called miuk gouk.
