Types of Modern Fireplace Tools
In order to maintain safety, fireplace tools are important. In the late 18th century, most fireplace tools were wrought out of iron with copper ends. These worked greatly since the iron was sturdy enough to keep in touch with the fire. Some modern tool use it today as well.
Fire Bellows
This tool may look like its from a few centuries back but it is actually modern. The two handles on each side must be pushed together in order to create a fire going in the hearth. The air that pushes onto the hearth can keep a dying down fire from burning out. This is an indispensable tool and should be kept nearby especially if there is an electrical blackout.
Fireplace Broom
This tiny broom sweeps away ashes that can cause allergies or stroke up an unsafe fire. It can be used inside the fireplace and the area surrounding it with a small pan to brush the ashes into. These brooms clean up the fireplace adequately and should be placed inside the tool holder for easy access.
Tongs
Tongs grasp onto burning logs and can turn them over or push them against each other to keep the fire from dying out too quickly. They are a more advanced version of the age old poker, which was used to poke and prod logs together. Pokers and tongs can be used together and kept next to the fireplace. Tongs are usually iron cast and sturdy, being long enough to keep the user away from the ascending flames.
