1. Clean the Chimney

Cleaning the chimney flue makes it easy to see exactly what damage has been done. This will also cut down on the soot interfering when you begin work.

2. Remove Damaged Bricks

You can only remove damaged bricks from the outside of the chimney. Use a hammer and chisel to knock out the damaged bricks.

3. Replace Damaged Bricks with New

Place a layer of mortar where the bricks need to be replaced. Tightly put new bricks in the damaged area.

4. Seal with Caulk

Once your brickwork is finished, cover the area with waterproof caulking.

5. Double Check

Check the entire brick area for any loose mortar. Apply a layer of caulk over any loose mortar. This will help prevent the mortar from crumbling in the future.
