Types of English Equestrian Apparel

Just as playing basketball, going golfing or running track requires the participant to wear special clothing, horseback riding also requires special attire. Unlike Western riding, which is characterized by cowboy hats, cowboy boots and chaps, English riding demands a much different wardrobe. In order to be comfortable, safe and have the best riding experience possible, certain types of English equestrian apparel should be worn.

Helmets

A helmet is one of the most important accessories that a rider can wear.  Riding helmets are made out of an impact-resistant resin or plastic shell and have an impact absorbing inner material. English riding helmets are often covered in black velvet or velveteen to mimic early style English riding headwear.

Breeches

Traditionally made to be tight in the legs and roomy in the seat area, breeches are now made to be tight fitting throughout the entire article of clothing due to improvements made in the stretchability of new materials such as spandex. Several different variations of breeches exist, such as knee patch breeches which stop mid-calf and have a grippy material in the inside knee area or full seat breeches which have a grippy material over the inner knee, thigh and seat area.

Show Coats

Show coats are designed to be worn during competition and are usually shades of dark earth tones. Most button down the front and some have front pockets or long coat tails.

Show Shirts

Generally worn under show coats, show shirts are white button up shirts that often have high neck collars. Special materials can be used for these shirts to make them breathable and stretchy for added comfort.

Riding Boots

Riding boots are essential when riding with any kind of saddle as they have a heel that can prevent the foot from sliding through the stirrup. Some English riding boots are classified as tall boots which come up to the knee whereas others, such as paddock boots, only come to the ankle. English riding boots are generally brown or black and can come in several different styles.
