How to Study Tax Law

The tax code in the United States is very complicated, so some lawyers choose to specialize in tax law. If you want to study tax law, you should get your bachelors degree in accounting, read books on tax law and take classes on tax law while you are in law school.

  1. Attend college and study accounting. A bachelor's degree in accounting provides a useful foundation for future studies in tax law. You will also generally get the chance to take an introductory tax law course while you are studying accounting. This will allow you to be sure you are interested in further studies in tax law.

  2. Join on campus groups relating to your interest in tax law. If your college has a club for accountants or for people interested in attending law school, join them. This will give you even more opportunities to learn about tax law.

  3. Read books on tax law. While you are getting your bachelor's degree, you can also read up on the subject of tax law. When you take your tax law course as an undergrad, check the bibliography in your textbook for useful books to read on the topic.

  4. Apply for admission to law school. During your last year as an undergraduate, you will need to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and then apply to law school.

  5. Attend law school. While you are in law school, take as many courses on tax law as you can. Over the summer, do an internship at a law firm that specializes in tax law. An internship will help you get practical knowledge about tax law.
