How to Start a Tanning Salon Business

Running your own tanning salon can be a fun and profitable way to earn a living.  Like any business, though, it requires a lot of hard work and dedication to start a tanning business and be successful.  If you are interested in starting your own tanning business, read along for some tips.

  1. Do your research.  Visit other tanning salons to observe how they operate.  Speak to salon owners about what it took to get started, how they became successful and their day-to-day business operations.  The more informed you are, the more successful you will be.

  2. Develop a business plan.  This is the first step to starting any small business.  Your business plan should be thorough.  Include the types of services you will offer, how many tanning beds or booths you will have in your shop, your desired location and any other business details that you wish to include.

  3. Obtain financing.  Contact local banks and credit unions to inquire about obtaining a small business loan.  Share your business plan with them and complete the application process in order to obtain the necessary funding to open your business.

  4. Find a location.  Search for a location for your salon.  You will want to find a location with a lot of car or foot traffic.  Decide whether you wish to purchase or lease a building.  Contact a real estate agent to help you in your search.

  5. Purchase your equipment.  Along with tanning equipment, you will need a reception desk, chairs or couches for a waiting area and basic office and computing equipment.  Use your business loan to obtain all of the equipment that you need for your salon.

  6. Get the necessary insurance.  Your bank will likely require that you carry certain types of insurance as a part of your loan criteria.  Contact an insurance agent to inquire about what other types of insurance you must carry.  Purchase the insurance policies to ensure that you are properly covered in all situations.

  7. Advertise.  Hang signs and flyers, purchase classified ads in local newspapers and publications.  Consider offering free trial offers or other discounts to bring customers in the door and develop a strong client base.
