How to Open a Drug Store
Drug stores can be an attractive small business opportunity for entrepreneurs. However, there are some steps that you will need to take before you open a drug store. The proper preparation in opening your drug store will ensure the store is successful. A mainstream location and marketing will help the store become profitable.
- Choose between a local ownership and a franchise within a department or grocery store. A franchise ownership is where you own and operate the store, however the franchise helps with start-up costs and the store bares their name. For example, you can own a “Rite-Aid” store through a franchise. If you are looking to open a drug store named after you or a family member; you would want to choose a local ownership.
- Decide upon a location where there will be a lot of traffic and good parking. This should also be a location that is easy to access from a main road.
- Complete the necessary state pharmacy applications. Each state will have different requirements for opening a drug store. Be sure to contact your local administration, such as City Hall, to obtain the proper requirements.
- Organize the inside of the store. Keep in mind that you will need a private consultation area for patients, enough workspace and plenty of storage.
- Hire pharmacists and assistants who are certified to work within your state. You may also be required by your state to hire a pharmacist-in-charge but this will vary from state to state.
- Create an effective marketing plan. There are drug store associations and marketing experts who specialize in this field available to offer you advice here. Create fliers to mail to local residents, offer incentives to come to the store and plan weekly sales.
- Make sure that you have good security in place. Since your drug store will be handling controlled substances, you will need to make sure that both your employees and the premises are properly protected at all times.
- Setup a grand opening date and time. Spread the word through the local community, go on local radio shows and place large signs outside the store.
