How to Make Butterfly Kites

A butterfly kite is one of the easiest kites to make. Not only do they look beautiful soaring through the air, but kids also love them. These types of kites are so easy to make that a kid can make it without looking to an adult to help them with the task.

How to Make Butterfly Kites

  1. Place paper horizontally on the table and fold it in half.

  2. Unfold the paper and use a magic marker to draw a line that traces the fold you just made.

  3. Put a protractor to the left of the line at the bottom of the paper and draw a straight line at a 70-degree angle.

  4. Place the protractor to the right of the line and draw a straight line at a 110-degree angle.

  5. Draw the left half of the butterfly on the left side of the paper. The drawing should be approximately 8.5" tall and 5" wide.

  6. Repeat step 5 for the other side.

  7. Fold the paper down the center mark again with the butterfly parts you just drew being on the outside.

  8. Fold the wing of each butterfly inward following the angled lines.

  9. Use your hand to hold the butterfly together.

  10. Turn the kite over and apply tape on the back to keep it together.

  11. Place a bamboo skewer across the back of the top part of the butterfly and tape into place.

  12. Push a pin through the small part of the fold about 3" from the top.

  13. Put some tape around the hole to keep it from tearing.

  14. Put the kite string through the hole and tie a knot in it to keep it in place.
