How to Make Ancient Chinese Art Using Clay
Although early periods of Chinese art feature different styles and techniques, clay sculptures are part of art collections from each dynasty. While this type of clay artwork is priceless, you can create a replica of these ancient sculptures using clay.
Items needed:
- Self-hardening clay
- Wood cutting board
- Pottery knife
- Sponge
- Acrylic paints
- Paintbrush
Instructions:
- Select the subject of the sculpture. Ancient Chinese sculpture usually featured animals, including horses, birds and fish. Vases and bowls were common as well. Refer to a book on Chinese art and pottery for more ideas.
- Put the clay on the wood cutting board. Start kneading the clay, using the palm of your hand to repeatedly press the clay to make it more pliable. Work with smaller portions, gradually adding larger amounts of clay.
- Create the basic form. If you are sculpting an animal, start molding the clay into a basic animal form. Create the legs or wings, as well as the head and body. Those creating vases or bowls should start molding the clay in a round or tubular fashion.
- Refine the form of the clay. Once the basic form is established, work with the clay to create natural lines, features and a defined structure.
- Add details. Those creating an animal sculpture should use a pottery knife to add characteristics such as eyes, mouth, feathers, claws and muscle definition. If you are making a vase or bowl, add a pattern or design to the vase with the pottery knife.
- Smooth the clay. Once the sculpting process is complete, use a damp sponge to smooth the clay. Gently wipe the sponge over the sculpture to ensure an even texture. A damp paintbrush may also be used.
- Allow the sculpture to dry. Place the sculpture in a dry area at room temperature, and let the sculpture sit for at least 24 hours. Larger sculptures may require additional drying time.
- Paint the sculpture. Use acrylic paint and a paintbrush to add color to the sculpture. Although any color palette can be used, try to make the sculpture look more authentic by using a soft stroke.
