Materials Needed

  • Flagstone

  • Tape measure

  • Marking paint

  • Rake

  • Power tamper

  • Gravel

  • Rubber mallet

  • Sand

  • Push broom

  • Jointer

  1. Use a tape measure to take measurements of the entire area where you want to place the flagstone patio. Take the measurements with you when you shop for the stones.

  2. Create a line around the entire area using marking paint. Once the area is marked you can dig to a depth of 6 inches inside the line. Use a rake to smooth out the area after you dig up the dirt.

  3. Use a power tamper to pack down the entire area. Place 1 inch of gravel over the location. Use the power tamper to pack down the gravel.

  4. Set the flagstone in the area. Begin placing them close to the home and work outwards. Stand on top of each flagstone after you place it and then hit it with a rubber mallet after you stand on it. This will ensure that each piece is set. Make sure you leave a 4-inch gap between each piece.

  5. Fill the joints between each piece of flagstone. Place sand all over the entire area. Use a push broom to sweep the sand into to the joints. Pack the sand with a jointer.
