How to Landscape the Porch

Your porch is the portal to your home, the first impressions people get of your house and a place for you and your family to enjoy. Landscaping your porch properly is important to creating the overall appeal of your abode.

Supply List

  • Paint

  • Outdoor varnish, deck tiling or other flooring option

  • Outdoor furniture

  • Hanging baskets, flower box or potted plants

  • Lighting

  • Tools

  • Hooks

  1. Paint the porch a color that enhances the overall feel of the home. Depending on your porch, you may opt for different patio tiling or decking options in addition to purchasing or refinishing your front door. Do not forget to refinish your outside windowpanes and any other fixtures attached to the front of your residence.

  2. Choose any furniture you want to place on your front porch, for both look and for comfort. You do not need to furnish your porch like a living room, a lawn chair or two, or an outdoor loveseat works just fine. You might want to place a small weatherproof table on your porch as well. Wicker is a clean-looking option, which you can place a decorative cushion on to augment the front of your domicile while having a comfy place to relax.

  3. Purchase a few hanging baskets along with hooks to hang from your awning or eaves. Garden centers and flower shops have a wide variety to choose from, but you can make your own by purchasing the hanging basket, some flowers and soil.

  4. Buy any potted plants you wish to place on a table or banister (if you have a thick enough one to situate anything on.) Flower boxes work well for this purpose.

  5. Select the lighting you want your porch to have. There are many choices available including motion lights, traditional porch lights, a lamp post for the yard, track lights or rope lighting.
