How to Kill Fleas in Grass

Millions of families own a cat or dog and when the weather turns warm it could mean fleas in the yard. A pet owner often worries about fleas and wants to know how to kill fleas in grass so they do not enter their home. It is harder to rid the house of fleas then it is the lawn.

Pet owners worry about fleas when the weather turns warm. Fleas infest the grass and then hitch a ride on your dog or cat and bring them into the house where they are harder to get rid of then the yard. There are a few basic ways a homeowner could rid their lawn of fleas, some natural and some chemically.

  1. Take up all possible flea hiding places. Wheelbarrows, old lumber and any debris that isn't being used should be cleaned from the yard.

  2. Rake up all excess leaves and grass clippings around doghouses, patios and the house because this is another flea hiding place.

  3. Cut the grass short once a week.

  4. Use a good flea insecticide such as bifenthrin, which is mixed with water and sprayed over the yard. Be sure to wear protective gloves and long sleeve clothing when using this type of product.

  5. Between treatments with bifenthrin, sprinkle Borax or a mixture of vinegar and water (more vinegar than water) over the yard to help kill fleas naturally.

It is not enough to kill the fleas in the yard. Once a week or so take a flea comb and remove fleas from your pet. You could also use the vinegar and water solution on your pet to kill fleas.
