How to Get Rid of the Rubber Smell in a Yoga Mat

How to Fix a Slippery Yoga Mat

To fix a slippery mat, wash it with soap and water or place it in the washing machine to remove dirt and sweat residue.  Also, you can put a cotton mat on top of your slippery one to reduce slippage.

  • Wash your yoga mat after every use to remove dirt and sweat that causes your mat to be slippery.  Use warm water and dish soap to wash it making sure to clean the entire area.  Hang your mat up to dry after cleaning or wipe it down with a clean cloth to remove excess water.

  • Put your yoga mat in the washing machine and wash it with laundry detergent and hot water.  This will fix a slippery mat by getting dirt out of deep grooves.  Also, this will slightly stretch your yoga mat making it less slippery.

  • Place a yoga mat made from cotton on top of your slippery mat.  This can be done during class to reduce the slippage of your mat.  Spray your slippery mat with water and place the cotton mat on top of it to get the two mats to stick together.  This can also be done with a thin towel if you do not have a cotton mat.

  • Apply apple cider vinegar to your yoga mat to make it less slippery.  This can be done by sprinkling vinegar over your mat and letting it sit for 15 minutes.  After 15 minutes rinse the vinegar off your mat and let it dry.  The acid in the vinegar will make your mat less slippery by removing some of the coating on the top of your mat.
