How to Fix a Frozen Air Conditioner

During hot months it is common for the air conditioner to freeze. This occurs when the coils become frozen leading to diminished performance. The cold air in the tubes freezes the AC. This can lead to damage to the air conditioner.

Materials

  • Coolant with installation kit

  • Rags

  • Blow dryer

  • Vent filters

  • Screw driver

Instructions

  1. Turn off the air conditioner by unplugging it from the main outlet for a day or two to allow the suction line to thaw. Turn off the breaker switches.

  2. Wait for the unit to thaw completely and use the rugs to wipe any moisture or condensation on the unit. Use the hair dryer to ensure the unit is completely dry and all the ice is gone.

  3. Switch on the fan and inspect the unit to see if the fans are working properly. If they are not, they will need to be replaced.

  4. Turn off the unit and find the air filter, which is located in the front part of the unit. Remove the panel holding the filter in place and inspect it.  If there is any dirt on the filters this can limit the flow of air and affect the temperature. Remove any dirt or debris and change the filters every month.

  5. Remove the vent filters and replace them with new ones. The filters are available in most stores. Follow the instructions carefully when installing filters.

  6. Apply coolant to the air conditioning unit. The unit comes with an installation kit, which has directions on how to add the coolant. Follow the direction carefully for safe application.

  7. Turn on the unit to verify that it is working. If it is still having problems, check the thermostat settings. The thermostat batteries may need to be changed.

  8. Contact a technician if the problem persists as it may be due to low amounts or refrigerant, which requires a trained professional to recharge.
