How to Draw Men's Clothing

The basics of fashion design include inspiration boards, drawings, fabric swatches, draping, pattern design, sewing and photographs of completed projects arranged in a portfolio. Standards are set by the fashion industry for men’s clothing, with considerations for sizing and seam allowances. The first steps of a project include inspiration and drawings. Read the following basic steps for design project inspiration and drawings for men’s clothing.

Items Needed:

  • Colored pencils

  • Eraser

  • Men’s fashion magazines

  • Number three pencil or lighter

  • Number two pencil

  • Paper

  • Scissors or paper clips

  1. Sketch the outline of a male silhouette with a light pencil. It is not necessary to fill in the eyes, ears, or other features.

  2. Decide on a particular season to form a proper wardrobe.

  3. Look through men’s fashion magazines for ideas of clothing articles to sketch.

  4. Utilize paper clips to mark the pages, or clip the photographs from the magazines for easy reference.

  5. Utilizing the number two pencil, draw pants or shorts in a design of choice.

  6. Erase the lines of the male silhouette that fall inside the lines of the pants or shorts.

  7. Observe proper body proportion when drawing the articles of clothing.

  8. Draw a shirt either tucked in or worn on the outside of the waistband.

  9. Erase the lines of the pants or shorts that appear within the lines of the shirt, if the shirt is to be worn outside the waistband. Also, erase the lines of the arms that appear within the lines of the shirt.

  10. Sketch a belt, chain, watch or other accessories.

  11. Choose appropriate shoes to draw for the outfit and season. Dress shoes should be sketched for dress pants. Loafers or sandals are appropriate for summer casual wear and perhaps boots for winter.

  12. Avoid a cartoon effect by drawing shoes and other accessories to appropriate size proportions.

  13. Add buttons, pockets, zippers, shoelaces and other details to clothing articles and accessories.

  14. Color in the clothing articles and accessories with colored pencils.

  15. Choose carefully coordinating colors for shirts and pants.

  16. Remember that certain colors such as khaki, gray and black are considered neutrals that match any other color.

  17. Add designs to the shirts such as stripes or plaids, if desired.
