How to Create a Good Embroidery Font

Creating a good embroidery font only requires a little creativity and some skill. With all the software programs available today, creating custom fonts is extremely easy. You can also tweak fonts you already have if they don't work for the project you are working on. You'll need some basic tools and time to make your own fonts.

Creating an embroidery font can be a fun and challenging way to make your projects unique to you. There are several ways to go about creating the perfect font with just a few easy to find and inexpensive tools.

What You’ll Need

  • Sketch Paper

  • Graphing Paper

  • Embroidery

  • Permanent Marker

  • Colored Pencils

  1. Decide on your embroidery font based on your design. For instance, a traditional or delicate design will be better complemented with a thin or a cursive font. For more modern or bold designs, a thicker and blocky font will better do it justice.

  2. Get your font idea sketched out on paper. It is best to draw the font to the size needed for your embroidery project. Practice on the font design and size until you feel comfortable with it. Once you are ready, outline the font in a permanent marker that is a dark color.

  3. Put a piece of graph paper over your design once the marker has had time to dry. Each box of the graph paper should be used as a specific guide for each stitch used to fill in the design on your paper. Mark each of these boxes with an “X” or fill them in with a pencil.

  4. Use this paper as reference for your actual design. It is common for embroidery fabrics to be made of linen or wool. This is because they are very easy to use for font designs because of how they are woven. Once you become more advanced in creating fonts you can try other materials.
