How to Clean Central Air Conditioning Unit Coils
By maintaining your central air conditioner you can make it last longer. Central air conditioner maintenance takes time and effort, but it can also save you money on your utility bills. You only need a few tools to successfully get the job done.
Items needed:
- Stiff bristled brush
- Rake
- Weed Eater
- Go to the breaker box in your home and turn off your air conditioning unit. In many cases, the switches are clearly labeled by the person who did the electrical work for your home.
- Get your weed eater and begin trimming away all of the vines and grass near the unit. Be careful not to clip any exposed wiring or damage the unit with the weed eater.
- Locate a rake to clean up any leaves or excess grass around the air conditioning unit. Dispose of the leaves using your preferred method. You may consider placing them in a compost pile, burning them or placing them in a trashcan. Make sure you speak with the city before deciding to burn them or place them in the trash. In some cases, city garbage collectors do not accept compost. You can also call the fire department to see if a burn ban may be in effect.
- Grab the stiff bristled brush and begin scrubbing away at the air conditioning unit coils. Continue scrubbing until all of the debris has been removed from the coils.
- Return to the breaker box inside your home and locate the switch labeled for your air conditioning unit. Turn this switch back on to complete the job.
