How to Change Your Car's Brake Fluid
Your car’s brake fluid should be changed at least every two years in order to maintain your car's safety and in proper working order. Also, moisture and dirt could get into the fluid over time and could cause problems with the functioning of the brake system.
Items Needed:
- Hose
- Wrench
- Container
- Brake spray
- Brake fluid
- Jack
- Towel
- Park the car and lift up the hood of the car. Using the brake spray, clean around the master cylinder and wipe it with a clean towel. This stops dirt from entering.
- Put a jack under the car and ift it up. Put jack stands under the car are well, and use a wrench to loosen the bleeder valve.
- Have someone push down on the brake pedal when you ask them to. This stops the bottoming out of the brake pedal. As they do this, open the bleeder valve completely and drain the brake fluid from the tank into a container. When the pedal reaches the floor have them tell you and close the valve.
- Put more fluid back into the cylinder and repeat the same process until the fluid comes out clear to ensure the tank is clean.
- Once it comes out clear, add more brake fluid into the tank up to the full level and tighten the cap again.
- Lower the car, remove the jack, and drop the hood.
- To remove the brake warning light, which will be on, push down on the brakes hard. The light should turn off.
