How to Care for an African Wig
A synthetic wig often looks great when you first purchase it; however, over time a synthetic African wig can start to look worn out if it is not properly taken care of. The life span of a synthetic African wig is not as long as a human hair wig, but you can increase the life span of your African wig by properly caring for it.
- Comb out any tangles that have formed in your wig each time you take it off for the night. You want to remove all tangles before storing it to increase the longevity of the wig.
- Use a wide-bristled comb that is not going to fray the ends of the synthetic hair strands to work out any tangles. Be careful, and do not pull too hard of you could cause the synthetic hair strands to fray. Instead, work your way from the bottom of the hair strands up to the top carefully until you have successfully detangled your wig.
- Store your wig properly when you are not using it by placing a rolled-up towel inside of the wig to help it maintain its shape. You should also place a hair net over the wig during storage to prevent it from getting tangled.
- Wash your synthetic wig regularly with a wig shampoo that is made specifically for synthetic wigs. Do not use regular shampoo on a synthetic wig; it will damage the delicate synthetic fibers. You can purchase a synthetic wig shampoo from your local beauty supply store rather inexpensively.
- Allow your wig to air dry after it has been washed. Never apply heat to a synthetic wig, as it will become ruined by melting the delicate synthetic fibers. You should simply use a towel to remove the excess water and then place it on a hook or wig rack to dry.
