How to Care for a Cheap Wig

Cheap wigs are a simple, fun way to update and add versatility to your look. There are many synthetic wigs, which are wigs made from animal hair or synthetic materials, and human hair wigs to choose from when making your buying decision.  With proper, regular maintenance, your wig will always look good, keep its shape and last a long time. The three essentials of caring for a wig are washing, combing and storage.

  • Wash your wig after about twelve times of usage. That is an approximation and the best way to determine if your wig needs washing is to simply smell it for odors and look for signs of obvious wear.

  • Fill a sink basin with cool water and use synthetic wig shampoo when washing a synthetic wig. You can even use laundry detergent.  If your wig has a strong odor, add a small amount of baking soda to the water.

  • Wash by hand for 60 seconds and then let soak for about 15 to 30 minutes.  Rinse wig with cool water and gently squeeze any extra water out of the wig, avoiding rubbing or twisting. Spray on a conditioner or sheen and let air dry.

  • Follow the same exact washing method as above for human wigs, except use lukewarm water. In addition, human wigs can tolerate heat from a hair dryer, which synthetic wigs cannot.

  • Select the best method for combing your wig. The style of the wig will help determine this. Use a wide toothcomb or your fingers for curly or wavy wigs.  If your wig is straight, it will less likely knot and tangle at the ends as opposed to curly wigs and you can basically use any type of comb or brush.

  • Spray wig with a leave-in wig conditioner or a de-tangler while combing, regardless of style, to make the combing process much easier.

  • Store wig on a wig head to keep its shape and cover it with a wig net or scarf to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on it.

  • Place the wig in an area where it is not exposed to excessive heat or direct sunlight. Following these easy maintenance tips will help extend the life of an inexpensive wig and will ensure that it always looks fresh.
