How to Care for Anthurium Flower Plants

Anthurium flower plants are native to the rainforests of South America and they thrive when kept in an environment which simulates their native habitat. While anthurium is basically low-maintenance, like many other plants it has specific needs. When given proper care, anthurium plants will grow beautiful, tropical flowers and shiny green leaves.

  • Pot your anthurium in a light potting soil that drains well. You can mix bark, peat moss or perlite in with the potting soil to increase drainage.

  • Water your anthurium daily, but make sure the roots never stand in water. Plant it in a pot with large drain holes and place a tray under the pot to catch the water. Empty the tray after every watering.

  • Place your anthurium in a shady location away from direct sunlight. Indirect sunlight is necessary, however, so make sure there is a window where your plant is kept.

  • Keep your anthurium at temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid damage. Frost will kill an anthurium and they don’t do well in cool temperatures. Anthurium plants are use to rainforest temperatures of between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit  and thrive in that temperature range. The best location for your plant is in the house or a greenhouse.

  • Offer a humid location in which your anthurium plant can grow. The higher the humidity, the healthier your plant will be. A bathroom where a shower or bath is used would be a good place to keep an anthurium.

  • Fertilize your anthurium once or twice a year. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer diluted to half the strength of what the label on the fertilizer recommends. Anthurium will die if it is over fertilized.
