How to Buy Backcountry Ski Skins

Backcountry ski skins attach to the bottom of backcountry skis, adding an element of traction to the skis. Ski skins make it easier to climb uphill with skis on, preventing backsliding and keeping backcountry skiers from tiring as quickly. Several aspects factor in when choosing the correct backcountry ski skins to purchase.

What You’ll Need

  • The manufacturer of your backcountry skis

  • Internet access

  • A source of transportation

1.  Decide how often you will be skiing. This will help you decide how much you want to spend on your ski skins. If you only backcountry ski occasionally, you are probably safe buying a less expensive skin without having to worry about it wearing out too quickly.

2.  Determine the length of ski skins you need. Ski skins come in full ski length, or short length, which only attach to the middle part of your skis. If you are climbing a lot or are doing a longer trip, you should consider the full-length ski skins. The short ones will work fine for the occasional backcountry ski day trip.

3.  Check the manufacturer of your backcountry skis. Some ski brands make ski skins that fit their particular ski perfectly. Look online to see if your ski brand is one of them. If your brand does not have its own line of skins, you may have to trim the skins you purchase to fit your particular skis.

4.  Choose the skin material that best suits your needs. Nylon ski skins are more durable and provide more traction. Nylon skins are generally better for doing a lot of backcountry climbing. Mohair ski skins are lighter weight and take up less space, so they are great for backpacking ski trips. Mohair also glides across the snow more smoothly.

5.  Go to a ski shop that sells backcountry ski skins and take a look at your options. Ask the knowledgeable sales clerks any questions you may have. Once you are ready, buy your backcountry ski skins.
