How to Adjust the Speed on a Hammer Drill
Hammer drills make quick work of big drilling projects, such as when you are working with concrete or stone. Many people think that hammer drills are just like regular drills, but the truth is that they can operate like a miniature jackhammer as well as a regular drill. Most hammer drills offer the option to adjust the speed, but they may do this in very different ways.
- Determine first whether your hammer drill has a variable speed trigger or a fixed speed trigger. With a fixed speed trigger, the drill turns on at one speed when you pull the trigger. When you release the trigger, the hammer drill turns off. Variable speed triggers operate in a different manner. If you pull the variable speed trigger partially, the hammer drill works in low speed. If you pull the trigger all the way back, the drill operates at full speed. Pull the trigger to adjust to the speed you need.
- Verify also whether your hammer drill has a locking mechanism for the trigger. This keeps the trigger locked in the "on" position while you operate the hammer drill.
- Check to see if your hammer drill has a gear selector switch. Set the switch to "low" gear for the slower speed, and set it to "high" gear for faster speeds.
