How To Install a Rearview Mirror in an Automobile
A car rearview mirror is attached with adhesive, and even though the adhesive is a strong one, humidity and heat can cause erosion of the bond. Since the interior of a car can be hot and humid, even in mild weather, mirrors can break loose just about anywhere. By following a few simple steps and being patient, you can easily fix the rearview mirror problem yourself.
Before replacing your rearview mirror, it is important to wait for a dry day. Humidity can interfere with the installation. Be sure and read the instructions and follow them.
1. Thoroughly clean the area where the old mirror used to be, using a sharp scraper.
2. Using a paper towel or cloth and some alcohol, remove any grease, oil or remaining adhesive.
3. Dry for at least 5 minutes.
4. Next, you’ll need to closely examine the attachment point of the mirror. There will be a small U-shaped button and you need to remove it. If there is a screw, simply unscrew it, otherwise, it is snapped into place; use pliers to hold down the restraining metal flange and pop out the button with your screwdriver.
5. When you have the button, remove any adhesive and clean the face with alcohol.
6. Wait 5 minutes for the button to dry.
7. Place the button against the windshield where you want the mirror to be placed. Be sure of your placement because once you attach it, it is difficult to remove again.
8. The curved end of the U-shaped button should be facing upward. This is VERY IMPORTANT! Use a crayon or marker to trace the location. Set the button aside.
9. Your repair kit should contain a small tube of adhesive, activator and sometimes, a spare button. Remove the activator container, usually a vial of liquid topped with a swab; squeeze the vial and the liquid soaks the swab. Then you use the swab to thoroughly coat the area where the mirror will be attached. Coat the surface of the button that will be attached also. Let both areas dry for 5 minutes.
10. Remove the adhesive from the kit, and after cutting open, squeeze a single large drop of glue onto the center of the inner face of the button. Don’t be too generous.
11. Place the glued side down onto the windshield, into the U-shape you drew with your crayon or marker. Continue to press for at least 1 full minute or longer. The longer you press, the better the glue grips. When you release the pressure, the button should be affixed to the glass.
12. Wait for one hour.
13. Reattach the mirror by carefully sliding the attachment receptacle on the mirror onto the button. Gently press down until you hear a click.
14. Clean the mirror and the area around with alcohol, then adjust the mirror to your advantage.
