Things You’ll Need
Eye ointment
Paper towel
Mirror
- Start with clean hands before applying any medication to the eyes. Wash the hands with warm water and soap. You want to thoroughly dry them with a towel.
- Sit in front of a mirror. Sitting directly in front of a mirror will help with seeing how to correctly apply the ointment.
- Take off the cap on the ointment. Lean your head back and lower the eyelid. Look up towards the ceiling.
- Hold the tube over the eye with your free hand. Squeeze a 1 cm line of ointment across the lower eyelid. It should not touch the eyelashes or eye.
- Close the eye for a minute and blink a couple of times. Blinking will spread the ointment over the eyeball.
- Keep blinking to clear vision. After applying the ointment, you will experience blurred vision. The first instinct is to rub the eyes, but just keep blinking until vision start to clear. Wipe away excess ointment with a clean paper towel.
- Repeat the same steps for the other eye, or as necessary. Follow the suggestions of the doctor when applying the medication.
- Replace the top back on the ointment and thoroughly wash your hands. If you have to apply more ointment, then you want to wait for 30 minutes before using another medication. Give the eye a chance to absorb the medication.
