About Air Conditioning Service and Maintenance

Air conditioner service and maintenance are important if you want your air conditioner to run properly. If you ignore regular maintenance, your appliance will lose effectiveness and will not last as long. By providing service and maintenance, you will get many more years of use out of your air conditioning system.

Scheduling service

It is a good idea to schedule a yearly service visit in order to check your air conditioning. This will allow you to be sure that everything is running properly and that you will get the proper amount of cooling. This will also save you money by cutting down on the energy you use. The best time to schedule service is spring time, before it gets too hot. Once the weather gets hot, the wait time to get a technician out may be longer.

Maintenance

During yearly maintenance a number of items will be checked and serviced.

• Filters: This is perhaps the most important maintenance project. Filters have to be cleaned or replaced at least once per year. A dirty filter blocks the air flow, which means that it is not running efficiently. A Clean filter reduces the amount of energy you will use to cool your home.


• The air conditioner coils: These coils can get dirty as a result of a dirty filter, or they may collect dirt if they are outside in a dusty location. All coils will collect dirt from time to time. Cleaning them is important to keep the heat absorbing capacity where it should be.


• The coil fins: These are located on the condenser coils. These fins should be checked for proper shape. The fins can and do bend easily, when they bend they sometimes block the flow or air through the coils. These can be combed out with a special coil comb, so they are proper alignment again.
