THE LAW AND YOU

Heard any good lawyer jokes lately? We love them. We find them hilarious. Many attornys over many years have earned that type of reputation. THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER, however, is that everyone hates lawyers until they need one. When a family member gets hit by a wreckless driver, your little brother gets arrested for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, when creditors are unfairly harrassing you, or you have a medical procedure go awry due to negligence on the part of medical staff, who is the first person you call? Of course! it is your attorney! When you or a loved one get in situation that requires legal assistance, you don't want to entrust your future to just anyone. Look for an attorney you will be compatible with. Some tips to help you: 1. Make sure the attorney's personality does not clash greatly with your own. if you cannot get along with your attorney, you won't be able to effectively assist him in your case. 2. Check up. Contact the State Bar Association and see if he has a good reputation. Ask around your local area to see what you can find out. 3. Make sure he or she is clear on what you want, and that you are clear on what he/she fels is a reasonably expectable outcome. 4. Make sure you ask as many questions as you can, and that you have a full understanding of the potential consequences of following his or her advice. 5. Make sure you know and understand how to obtain status reports on your case (do they prefer you to call, email, or write? Do they send out periodic reports?) 6. Make sure you ask for an estimated time frame to complete the case. Also, be prepared to hurry up and wait. Cases take time - more than you realize until you are the one on the waiting end. Many cases settle quickly, but some do not. If your case falls into this category, be reasonable in your expectations. Don't be afraid to ask you attorney what the delay is. Good luck with your case. Make sure you hire an attorney that really CARES. M Rigdon, Paralegal ...read more
