Support Family Businesses and American Made Products

As a child, I thought my father was amazing. It seemed he could do anything he set his mind to, whether or not he had the experience or know how. My earliest memories of him creating works with his hands date back to around the late seventies. I remember sitting in the backseat of his car which was parked along the street of the bank which employed him. My father needed to stop in and was taking myself and my brother. As my dad started to reach for me in the back seat, he told me to be careful. That's when I noticed a leather hat - shaped similar to a cowboy's hat which had been hand stitched by my father. Over the years he made hats, shoes, and belts from leather, eventually moving to other mediums. Branching out led him into woodcarving. My entire family oohed and ahhed over the first very basic wooden duck my dad carved, which today we keep to remember where we started. Right next to it sits a beautiful Mallard, the last duck my father carved. The bird is positioned in a natural setting and is shown scratching his head. The feathers are individually carved and inserted which makes some appear ruffled. This attention to detail with a drive to learn and create, has been the foundation of my family. My father was an educated man who wore a suit to work everyday until he decided to hang his tie and follow his dreams. Since 1983, he has been handcrafting traditional period furniture in-house for individuals and families nationwide. Much of the last 25 years has been spent meeting other craftsmen and their families. Along the way we have learned that they too have a story and a reason for continuing to create. Today my husband Ed and I are second generation craftsmen leading Ashlen beyond its 25th year. My hope for our future is that more retail storefronts become a place or outlet for craftsmen to showcase the talents. In addition, by offering more American Made goods, these stores help spread the story or history of the craftsman while becoming a vital asset to the consumer seeking quality American Made items for their home or business. Items that are safe and well made. Items that have a story or represent tradition. Items that are sustainable and will stand the test of time and can be passed down to generations to come. I'm not just speaking of Ashlen's future or furniture in general but also about pottery, paintings, pewter, carvings, and more. The unfortuante circumstance is that everything IS still made in America - it's just not easily obtained. ......for now. ...read more
