One characteristic imperative for a proficient counselor would be to demonstrate a genuine concern and compassion for the clients dilemma. Bill fails horribly in this category. Initially, the counselor should be able to listen and at appropriate times reflect by restating or rephrasing what the client has expressed. This serves two purpose. First it allows the client to feel he is being heard. And secondly, it allows for any misunderstandings to be identified and corrected. This will NOT happen with Bill. He in fact will spend most of your session talking as opposed to listening and then will point out the obvious reasons the client is there with a MORE negative approach as opposed to offering to listen and logically positioning the client to a positive solution.
