Alabama Notaries and Weddings
Wedding Bells are ringing all across the state of Alabama. My phone is also ringing from residents asking if I would be willing to conduct their marriage ceremony. After I congratulate them on finding Mr. Right (it is usually the bride-to-be who calls me) I explain that as a Notary Public, I am not authorized to conduct weddings. I am aware that Florida, Maine and South Carolina are states that do allow notaries to help "tie the knot" (and there may be other states, as well). However, Alabama's Code is clear about this not being one of Notary's duties. One lady called me and was adamant that I conduct her wedding. She was positive that I I did not know what I was talking about. In fact, she told me that she had spoken to someone at the Alabama Secretary of State's office. Well, she nearly had me convinced. I started wondering if there had been a recent change in the law that I was not aware of. So, I placed a call the Secretary of State/Notary Division in Montgomery, AL; and was reassured that I was correct. Tthere had not been any recent legislative changes to the Code of Alabama for Notary responsibilities. I also learned that there are some Notaries in Alabama who are also ministers and as a minister they are able to legally perform weddings. When I explained this to the desperate future-housewife, she finally understood and went searching for a Notary Public/Minister. As an Alabama Notary Public, I am commissioned to verify a person's identity and witness signatures. This includes conducting loan closings and traveling to homes and businesses to notarize a variety of documents.
