Beware- unscrupulous business practices. I do not recommend this funeral home. They’re treatment toward me was immoral and shows the ownership has lost sight of helping people and basic common decency. I hope you can find a better place to handle the final care of your loved one. Good luck to you and God Bless, Richard Amos ...read more

If I could give them a 0 star I would. I and my family were highly disappointed in the manner in which they handled our Father's funeral and how they had treated him since the passing of my mother and getting her marker placed. The marker has been paid in full and as of 12/13/09 when we were last out to visit the marker had not been placed down and their graves had been ran over numerous times by a tractor. No grass had been placed down and no marking of any sort as to their graves being there. If you have not purchased a plot there Don't! You will not be satisifed with the cemetary or their staff. Sincerely, Patricia Calera, AL ...read more

Coffin or urn? Cremations are on the rise due to cost

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Athens resident Mallory McCormack is a healthy 29-year-old woman, but she knows what she wants for her body after she dies. Death isn't a taboo topic for the University of North Alabama graduate, who was 15 when she battled leukemia. During a time when most kids her age were preoccupied with their algebra homework or getting their learner's permits, McCormack had a lot of time to reflect on what she would want if her blood cancer turned fatal. View full size State-by-state cremation and burial statistics for 2013. (The NFDA Cremation Report: Research Statistics and Projections) McCormack, who grew up attending "Decoration Day" events at cemeteries with her family, always came back to cremation. "For me, it's more of not taking up space that could be used for something to enhance the earth for future generations," she said. "I don't want to take up space with a headstone or marker. I want my memories and my legacy to be the thing that lives on, not bones." Cremation, the act of reducing a body to ashes through burning, is a better alternative to traditional burial for a rising number of Americans, an October report from the National Funeral Directors Association shows. In fact, the agency said the national cremation rate is expected to surpass that of burial next year. Consumer preference? By the end of 2015, the U.S. cremation rate is projected to be 48.2 percent, up slightly from 45.8 percent for burials. NFDA estimates a whopping 70.6 percent of the population will choose cremation by 2030. Where does Alabama fall in all of this? NFDA says burial topped the generally-cheaper cremation option at 77.4 percent in 2013. Even our furry friends aren't immune to the trend. A first-of-its-kind survey by the Pet Loss Professionals Alliance released in 2013 found 49 percent of pet-loss businesses operate an animal funeral home or memorial center, 34 percent run cemeteries and 77 percent have on-site crematories. Of the more than 1.8 million pets seen by pet loss businesses in 2012, 99 percent were cremated. A 'less-traditional direction' Industry veteran Chad Walters is a general manager at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville. The family-owned business has been doing on-site cremations for customers and funeral homes in outlying cities since the 1980s, he said. Walters, who has worked in funeral homes as far south as Mobile, said the number of cremations has steadily risen every year, especially in Madison County where a large percentage of residents are not natives of Alabama. In smaller towns and areas like Mobile, Walters said the vast majority of residents still choose traditional burial for personal or sometimes religious reasons. source: AL.com ...read more
