Hemlock Ridge Charters

Tried these guys this year. They knew some spots, we caught fish but it seemed like I was fishing on a guy's boat as a favor rather than a guide's boat for money. They guys were great, they are very likelable but I get the feeling they are a family with a boat and some fishing spots that decided to give guiding a try this year. I say this as based on my experience I would say they have never been on a decent guided trip and thus do not know how to treat their customers. It is hard to sum it up here, I had a great day just not what I was expecting, but you know what they say about expectations!I would honestly recommend you fillet your own fish! ...read more

New to hunting in Alaska?

Just moved to Alaska and want to go hunting? I hear this a lot - my first question is: have you every camped in the bush? Camping is practice for hunting trips in the bush. It helps you figure out what gear you really need and what really works. If you don't use it in three trips you don't need it. How's that tent in blowing wind, sideways rain, standing in 2 inches of water? Will it hold up to a few inches of snow? If you have a warm dry place to sleep, you will survive the most weathered out hunting trips. Bring extra food, water and fuel - plan for being stuck. I have spent some rained out trips where having a good tent, thick air mattress and a -40 sleeping bag  was the difference between misery and being comfortable. Even though going out means getting soaked I knew there was a dry shelter to go to. So before you take off on your first Alaska hunting trip try a camping trip where you can scout for game and test out your equipment. Being prepared and sleeping well will improve your chances of getting game when you start out fully refreshed.
