Septic System Do's & Don'ts

Don't flush household waste. Don't flush hazardous chemicals. Don't build on septic tank or drain field. Don't send the back flush water from a water softener into your septic system. Do divert rainwater & snow melt from drain field. Do use water conservatively. Do fix leaking faucets & toilets. Do maintain grass cover over septic system. Don't grow trees on or by septic system. Do use cleaning products moderately. Do leave stand pipes up or mark them for maintenance. Don't empty a hot tub into the septic system. Don't add chemical or biological additives to your septic system. Don't use a garbage disposal. Don't use your system as a trash can. Do space out water usage throughout the day. Do keep records of repair, pumping's, inspections, permits & other activities. Do learn the location of your entire septic system. Don't drive or park on your septic system. Don't use powdered laundry soap. Do remember Clorox & vinegar kill bacteria. Don't flush wet wipes. Don't flush anything the manufactures say is septic safe, they lied. DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE A PROBLEM TO PUMP YOUR SEPTIC TANK. If the buildup of solids and sludge in tank becomes too high solids move to the drain field and can clog and strain the system to the point where a new drain field will be needed. ...read more
