When was the last time you watched your old home movies that were recorded on VHS, 8mm or some other format? How long has it been since you first recorded these? It's probably been some time but chances are they're still good, yay! That's the goods news. Unfortunately, at some point they won't play at all. (don't panic, we have more good news coming) This is because video tapes were never meant to last a lifetime. Every video tape format made such as 8mm, Mini DV, S-VHS, etc. all suffer from fading. This is because they all have one thing in common, that is, they use magnetic tape.  When you record onto a video tape using either a camcorder or VCR deck, the tape passes over a recording head that magnetizes the tape particles. When the tape is played back, the VCR understands these particles and is able to reproduce a sequence of video images so we can enjoy the recorded content.

These tiny particles hold their magnetic property for a very long time, probably 20 years or more. However, as time goes by and after each time the tape is played, a small amount of these tiny particles die :( They lose their strength and eventually fade away completely. You may only notice some static at first while the tape is being played back or the tape may only play on a handful of VCR players. This is because the magentic particles on the tape are weakening and some VCR's have better heads that can pick up these particles so they're able to play them, at least for a limited time. Worst case of course would be that the tape can no longer be played and you only see static or a blue screen. Now I promised you more Good News so here it is. Your tapes can be transferred to DVD or a digital file and your video will be saved! Even if you have the dreaded blue screen, our VCR players may be able to play it.
