Recently one of our clients sent a letter to the editor of her local paper on their recent fire. The letter was her way of thanking those that helped them as well as singling out our company Emergency Fire&Water Restoration for going above and beyond their expectations. One of the statements she made in her letter was that she never thought her family would experience a fire. However none of us do, do we? For many of us, we think that very same thought as we stand and survey the charred remains of what use to be our home.We thought we would take this opportunity to do a quick blog post on some simple safety tips. These tips are not new to us, but just like the safety tips we receive from flight attendants prior to takeoff, we tend to glaze over or half listen to them. Because let’s face it, the plane will never go down with us on it, and we will NEVER have a fire in our house. At Emergency Fire & Water Restoration we know differently! We know that fire does happen, and happens more often than most people realize, and that anyone can become a victim. · Take fire safety seriously! · Create a “family escape plan” if you don’t have one in place already. Set aside some time in the next day or so for a family meeting and create this plan.· Now that you have the escape plan created, practice it! Schedule a fire drill and practice the plan. This is the time to work out any problems with the plan and to remedy them . During a fire is not the time to realize that a window doesn’t open as far as it needs to, or that the escape plan is too confusing.· Keep your home safe. Take a walk around and look for any potential hazards. Look for frayed cords, overloaded extension cords, etc.· Install smoke detectors in every room! Make sure to test them monthly! Not sure if they will work? Replace them! · Change batteries twice a year.· Know the sound of the smoke detectors. In fact, interconnect your fire detectors so that when one alarm sounds, they all sound. Many newer homes have interconnected systems, if yours doesn’t, look into purchasing one.· 43% of all fires begin in the kitchen, so it makes sense to be very careful when cooking. We all do this (even though we know we shouldn’t) and that is, we leave the kitchen while food is cooking. If you must leave the kitchen, set a timer, so that if you get distracted, you will get a reminder that something is cooking. · Have a fire extinguisher in every room; and know how to use them! Learning to use a fire extinguisher during a fire is not the best idea! Our sincere hope is that you never experience the loss and devastation of a fire. Practicing the above tips will go a long way to make sure you don't.
