First, you travel away from the congestion/noise/familiar, into rolling hills of golden wheat ("amber waves") & later - an arid void. A lonely stretch of highway gives way to a turn off into a solitary gorge that seems to leave the last remnants of civilization behind. This ancient landscape was created by at least 8 ancient lava events that flowed effluvium as waves of wheat, the gorge's worn looming wall stratified with eons of existence. Did you just pass an ancient corral outcropping from when this was all sea-bed? Stunned by the powerful upheaval that shaped the surroundings you are unprepared for the oasis-like beauty emerging at the final bend. Vibrant green plants line the shore of Jameson Lake reflecting blue sky & walled by the most prominent monolithic outcropping of the gorge colonized by emerald & deep orange lichen, staging bird calls & the day's light show.
