About Steilacoom, WA
Steilacoom is a town in Pierce County along the Puget Sound. A major employer is Western State Hospital. Students attend the Steilacoom School District #1. The town clusters around a registered historic district. The active historical association, which has developed a logo with an apple and a gull to represent the beauty of the region, organizes a yearly Apple Squeeze Festival. Participants drink freshly-squeezed apple juice and enjoy activities, such as a walking tour of historic buildings. A weathered gray wagon shop and other historic buildings show the character of Steilacoom, the oldest incorporated town in the state of Washington. A famous past resident was Clara Antoinette McCarty Wilt, who was born in the town and had to flee with her family to Fort Steilacoom. Later, she became the first graduate of the University of Washington, which has now named a building after her, and went on to become a teacher and superintendent.
